Intimacy, dance and community were made tangible through larger-than-life projections in the urban space. For the TANZ Bremen Festival, our DIGITAL DIALOGUES provided the audience with completely new visual experiences: Larger-than-life couples danced via projection 10 façades of Bremen
(Grohner Düne, Staatsarchiv Bremen, Siedlung Tenever, St. Petri Dom, INNSIDE Bremen (Waterfront), Kunsthalle Bremen, Rotkäppchens Garten, Berliner Freiheit, Parkhaus Bremer Baumwollbörse, Theater Bremen).

For this project, five artists from Bremen formed dance tandems with five dancers from around the world (Burkina Faso, South Korea, Brazil, Canada and Bangladesh). The five couples entered into a dance dialogue via video chat; they worked out their individual forms of expression together, yet also across distance. They recorded this with camera, laptop or smartphone. The alternation of juxtaposition and togetherness became, as it were, an artistic statement in times of the all-determining Corona-related restrictions.

We edited the resulting material into a 30-minute film that was projected onto several façades per evening in Bremen’s urban space. It was a special concern of ours to also use places outside the city center and to make dance accessible for all Bremen residents. The projections on different building façades in the city gave the dance dialogues ever new impressions – Bremen’s buildings themselves became stages.

In this way, we used dance as a universal language and showed how digital means could be used to create intimacy.
